How to Remove Mascara Stains from Clothes?

Step: Act Quickly

  • Address the stain immediately to prevent it from setting into the fabric.
  • Avoid rubbing the stain as this can drive the mascara deeper into the fibers.

Step: Scrape Off Excess Mascara

  • Use a blunt knife or spoon to gently scrape off any excess mascara from the fabric surface.
  • Be careful not to tear the fabric, especially if it’s delicate.

Step: Pre-Treat with a Mild Detergent

  • Apply a small amount of liquid laundry detergent directly to the mascara stain.
  • Gently rub the detergent into the fabric using your fingertip or a soft-bristled brush.
  • Let it sit for about 10 to 15 minutes to break down the makeup oils.

Step: Use a Stain Remover or Dish Soap

  • If detergent alone isn’t sufficient, mix a few drops of dish soap with water for its grease-cutting properties.
  • Test this mixture on an inconspicuous area first to ensure it doesn't affect the color or fabric texture.
  • Dab the stain with the mixture using a clean white cloth, and gently blot rather than rub.

Step: Rinse Thoroughly

  • After pre-treatment, rinse the stained area with cool water to remove the detergent and any loosened mascara residue.
  • Continuously blot with a clean towel to absorb the moisture and the remaining makeup.

Step: Launder as Usual

  • Wash the garment as per the care label instructions using the warmest water safe for the fabric.
  • For stubborn stains, add a booster like oxygen-based bleach if it is safe for the fabric.
  • Double-check that the stain is completely gone before drying, as heat can permanently set the stain.

Step: Additional Tips for Delicate Fabrics

  • For silk, wool, or other sensitive materials, use a specialty detergent designed for delicate fabrics.
  • Consider hand washing in lukewarm water and gently agitating by hand to prevent fabric damage.
  • If in doubt, consult a professional cleaner especially if the garment is expensive or fragile.

Step: Repeat if Necessary

  • If the stain persists after the initial wash, repeat the pre-treatment and washing steps before using a dryer.
  • Do not dry the garment in a dryer until you are certain the stain is removed, as residual mascara can set permanently with heat.

How to Get Dried Mascara Stains out of the Clothes

Step 1: Assess the Fabric and the Stain

  • Examine the garment’s care label to understand the recommended washing method and temperature for the fabric.
  • Determine if the fabric is delicate, synthetic, or durable to choose the proper stain removal method.

Step 2: Scrape Off Excess Mascara

  • Carefully use a dull edge, like a spoon or a butter knife, to remove any dried mascara clumps without damaging the fabric.
  • Be gentle to avoid pushing the stain deeper into the fibers.

Step 3: Pre-Treat the Stain

  • Apply a small amount of liquid laundry detergent directly onto the stain. This detergent is designed to break down oily substances.
  • If you have a stain remover on hand, use it according to the product instructions for oily or cosmetic stains.
  • Gently rub the detergent or stain remover into the fabric using your fingertip or a soft-bristled brush. Avoid harsh scrubbing that might damage the cloth.

Step 4: Let the Treatment Soak In

  • Allow the detergent or stain remover to sit on the stain for 10-15 minutes. This waiting time lets the chemicals penetrate the stain and break down the dried mascara.
  • Avoid letting the product dry out on the fabric; if necessary, spray a little water to keep it moist.

Step 5: Rinse the Stain with Cold Water

  • Turn the garment inside out and rinse the back of the stained area with cold water. This helps push the stain out of the fabric fibers.
  • If possible, hold the fabric under a running cold tap so that the water flows through the stain, diluting the mascara residue.

Step 6: Launder with Care

  • After treating the stain, wash the garment in the washing machine using cold or lukewarm water, as recommended by the care label.
  • Use an appropriate laundry detergent that is effective in removing grease and makeup stains.
  • If the fabric is delicate, consider a gentle cycle or hand washing to prevent fabric damage.

Step 7: Inspect the Stain Before Drying

  • Before placing the garment in the dryer, inspect the treated area to ensure the stain has been completely removed. Drying can set the stain permanently if any residue remains.
  • If the stain is still visible, repeat the pre-treatment and washing steps before air drying the garment.

Step 8: Air Dry the Garment

  • Allow the garment to air dry on a drying rack or clothesline. Air drying prevents the heat of a dryer from setting any remaining traces of mascara.
  • Once dry, re-check the stain area. If a slight mark remains, treat it again promptly to avoid permanent damage.
